Vortex Shedding from Oscillating Cylinder
NCSA visualization worked with Arif Masud and Ramon Calderer from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to visualize vortex shedding created by an oscillating cylinder. Fluid forces cause the spring-attached cylinder to oscillate about its equilibrium position. The scientists were interested in studying the three dimensional nature of the resultant flow.
The project recently continued with a different experimental setup. The cylinder was kept motionless and the Reynolds number increased in order to study the vortical structures in the cylinder's wake.
